The Original Village School Foundation Stone

Mr Harry Harrop of Low Garth has  kindly donated the 2 pieces of the original schools foundation stone.

The current school was opened in 1861, therefore the original school predated this.

The original school stood on Marton village green, somewhere between the entrance to Ivy Close and the Village Hall

We therefore decided to build the stones into the wall of Ivy House garden, on the basis that this is both as close as we could get, and that we would not have to deal with council red tape as the wall is privately owned.

The following photos detail the local craftsman doing a superb job of removing a significant section of old wall without the whole thing falling down, and inserting the ancient foundation stone into the gap.

The inscription reads "This School was b....."

Mr Harrap has kindly offered to supply a plaque to explain the provenance of the stone.

Please feel free to stop by Ivy House to admire this rare survivor from our villages' past.

All of the above has been organised by Mr Peter Sutton
